Activation without vanity: picking a first-value moment

How Bangkok product teams can replace “signed up” with a definition that predicts who will still be around in week four.

Many teams celebrate signup volume while activation stays flat. The gap usually starts with a definition that is convenient to instrument rather than meaningful to the product.

A useful activation moment is something a new user does that proves they reached value—importing a file, inviting a teammate, completing a setup checklist, or finishing a first workflow. It should be rare enough to matter and common enough to measure weekly.

Start by listing three candidate moments with product and success. Then check historical cohorts: which moment best separates users who return in weeks two through four? That comparison is more honest than a debate about what “feels” like activation.

Once chosen, write the definition in one sentence, name the required events, and publish it where roadmaps and dashboards live. Shared language prevents growth from optimizing for a different signal than product.
